The recipient of a master’s degree in accounting from SUNY at Buffalo, Timothy “Tim” Maleck is a New York City-based Certified Public Accountant who served as a financial associate with PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP for several years. In addition to his professional pursuits, Timothy Maleck regularly volunteers for local projects through New York Cares.

Established in 1987, New York Cares is a nonprofit organization that mobilizes volunteers to support projects benefiting some of the city’s most vulnerable individuals. In 2017 alone, 63,000 volunteers served more than 400,000 New Yorkers in need by participating in projects relating to education and public spaces as well as food, clothing, and shelter. Every project organized by New York Cares requires a team leader, who is expected to take on additional responsibility throughout the planning and execution of the project.

Becoming a team leader allows individuals to strengthen their resumes and develop management skills, but in order to obtain team leader status, candidates must complete four necessary steps. After completing three volunteer projects as a team member, a candidate can participate in an Introduction to Team Leading session, followed by Team Leader Training. Finally, accepted team leaders who complete the Go Pass background check can begin selecting projects from a list put together by New York Cares. For instance, projects that have needed team leaders include the weekend volunteer corps at Prospect Park and the Chess Club at the Woodside Public Library.
